Aging with an Attitude

There is no such thing as “Too old,” at least not for Dorothy Custers from Twin Falls, Idaho. On her 102nd birthday, she zip-lined 500 feet off the Perrine Bridge, soaring high above the Snake River.

At 65, Diane Nyad was the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida. She wrote an inspirational book called Find a Way. Betty Jean McHugh set a half marathon record at the age of 88. Flo Meiler took up Track and Field in her 60’s. Now a decade later, she has competed in the National Senior games 13 times and holds 15 world records.

Another example is Donna Vano, the oldest pro-snowboarder in the world. At 56, she is a legend in the snowboard and skateboard industry and currently holds three Guinness World Records. You can watch her Youtube video here.

“I’m not getting older, I’m getting better,” she says.

I do not put myself in these brave women’s category, although I bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle in my 50’s.

I hear a lot of women say, “I could never do that.” But you can. Some of the women I ride with are less than 5 feet 5 inches, 120 pounds, and ride motorcycles that weigh 700 pounds.

After losing two good friends, both in their early 50’s, one to cancer and other had a heart attack, I decided to start checking things off of my bucket list. Besides buying the Harley, I literally decided to jump and went skydiving.

The small plane soared to 15,000 feet, then, jumper strapped himself firmly to my back. I had a little panic and reminded myself, “Fear is temporary; achievement is permanent.” He bumped me as we dove head first out of the plane. Falling at about 160 mph, I tried to savor the moment. As the parachute opened, the experience suddenly became calmer. I enjoyed the jump but have no intentions of doing it again.

There are many ways that you can get active without jumping off a bridge or out of a plane. Some examples are; tennis, golf, dancing, bowling, cycling, yoga, water arobics, zumba, and gardening, to name a few. For the braver at heart, mountain climbing, white water rafting, or surfing are exciting to try.

If you want to promote self-esteem and age with an attitude, get off of your couch and get moving.
